To say he is living in the shadow now of his younger relative is a bit unfair for Carruthers.
A former winner of one of the seasons flagship races The Hennessy Gold Cup, he is a class act in his own right. However age gets to us all and over the recent times his form has dropped to below what it once was. At the age of 12 this is thoroughly acceptable and possibly expected, but after the first 200 yards of this contest it appeared retirement was beckoning for him.
Slowly away and rousted along to get to his customary front running role, it was a slight surprise (albeit a pleasant one) to see him bowling along in front by the end of the first circuit.
Heading out down the back straight he once again did not appear to be enjoying himself... but stood down by the last fence you could feel the crowd in the stands expecting something as the runners turned into the straight.
He was sent off at 8/1 but over the last two lengths clear the crowd gathered at the last fence were all willing him home as Amigo rattled home from the back. They dragged up the hill to the line the crowd got louder and louder raising to a crescendo as he passed the post in front !
He had held on by a neck.. Prompting an onrush of people to surround the winners enclosure.
