Magnolia Stakes Day 2015
The Magnolia Stakes and Roseberry Handicap used to really signify the start of the flat season. With the Lincoln being run in the north at Doncaster, the Kempton meeting was the first time the flat returned to the south.
However since the inception of the AW course at the venue it has transferred to the synthetic surface. A move which disappointed some staunch followers, as Kempton used to have a beautiful flat track with the straight course running through the centre proving a popular spectacle.
All that said it is what it is, and thanks to Mr Gosden each year the meeting sees a Group Class horse participate in Magnolia Stakes.
This season it was the twice Group One Placed Romsdal... Walking around the paddock he didn't seem like the imposing individual he had looked last year and in the race itself he was a bit errant. It appeared that this was still a bit of immaturity and the fact he was making his own running, but when Nicky Mackay got hold of him in the straight and asked him to extend he galloped on powerfully to the line.
