Fair Eva sets up the day before
Nobody Could Reel Him In
The first highlight on the day was the reappearance of arguably Frankel's best baby in the form of Fair Eva.
Ridden this time by Frankie Dettori to replace the retained Ryan Moore, she looked an absolute picture heading to post and in the race it was clear from an early stage that she was not going to be tested at all.
Frankie settled her towards the rear of the field and crossing the intersection she ranged alongside the leaders before Frankie pushed the button and sent her fully four lengths clear in just over a furlong to win comprehensively by an increasing four lengths. Simply Class !!
This years King George VI Queen Elizabeth Stakes had been the victim of the last minute defection of Postponed. A warm order in the run up to the race he had left a big void in the spectacle.
Highland Reel had taken on the mantle of favourite and he was up against his Royal Ascot conqueror Dartmouth, a supplementary entry for her majesty, ridden once again by Olivier Peslier.
The three year old Wings of Desire was the challenger representing the three year old generation.
He had been a solid fourth in The Derby one unsuitably soft ground.
The money came for the favourite and as the stalls went back Ryan Moore was in no mood to take chances and sent on Highland Reel in to what was an uncontested lead with Frankie on Wings of Desire happy to take a lead. That was until Ryan, all of a sudden stole five very cheap lengths on the run to Swinley Bottom.
On the run along the side of the course he was under no pressure and was able to fill up the leader approaching the bend as the field began to close.
Frankie ranged alongside with two to go, but Ryan had been given too much rope to begin with and he decided enough was enough and Highland Reel duly picked up when asked the question and ran all the way through the line.
Wings of Desire ran a creditable race in second, but the winner had received an absolute peach from Moore and was the clearcut winner on the day. Dartmouth was never really in a position to challenge and this was another day in the office for Ryan Moore and the Aidan O'Brien team.
