Muhaarar takes the Greenham
The Greenham on paper this season was a scorcher, with a number of group winners from last season and the top rated two year old present in Belardo.
Richard Hughes who had earlier in the week was on the favourite Ivawood, a horse who he holds in the highest regard and was quoted as saying he would be disappointed should he get beaten.
However it was neither of these two who fought out the finish as the Hamdan Al Maktoum pairing of Estidhkaar and Muhaarar battled to the line, with the lesser fancied Muhaarar trained by Charlie Hills and ridden by Frankie Dettori proving the stronger.
He was a class horse in his own right last season winning the 6f Gimcrack at York and this appeared to be another step in the right direction. Surely the 2000 Guineas has to be considered now.
As for the others Ivawood plugged on into third and will benefit enormously for the run, but Belardo seemed to have less excuses except his better form last season was on a slightly easier surface.
