Derby Day 2015
A packed grandstand stood in anticipation of the Derby. The last time the favourite was ridden by Frankie Dettori was back in 2007 when the short priced favourite Authorized obliged and this year saw him pulling on the famous Oppenheimer silks to ride the well backed clear favourite Golden Horn.
Trained by the master of Clarehaven Mr John Gosden, Golden Horn had shown a sparkling turn of foot to take the leading trial, The Dante at York, beating in the process his two main rivals in Elm Park and stablemate Jack Hobbs.
The race was run at a good gallop with Hans Holbein and Elm Park taking each other on up the climb, with Hans Holbein getting the better of the argument and leading the field into the straight.
Two furlongs out Jack Hobbs hit the front and a glance back for a second you could have been forgiven for thinking it was a race winning move. Inside the two pole though Frankie drew the persuader on the favourite and the response was a classic winning change of gear that swept him to the front. He then proceeded to draw further and further clear on the punishing run to the line securing a place in the record books and winning Dettori his second Derby, this time for his old boss !!
